Owners Nigel and Michelle welcome you to The Old Mill Waterfront Cafe.
After moving to the Coromandel for the community feel and lifestyle this area offers, Nigel and Michelle fell in love with Tairua’s relaxed vibe and welcoming community.
Since taking ownership of The Old Mill Waterfront Cafe in early 2021, they’ve refreshed and renovated the cafe and its menu, combining fresh ideas with local feedback to create a vibrant casual dining experience. Nigel has been a chef for 34 years and is passionate about creating high-quality food and beverages. Michelle and her front of house team will take care of you while Nigel and the kitchen crew whip up your meal.
Tairua is a small seaside town with lots to offer! As well as a popular holiday destination and entrance to the Coromandel, it’s home to a thriving coastal community.
If you’re staying with us for a while, visit the Tairua Information Centre website to check out local marine activities, nature walks, and the rich history of our town.
The Old Mill Cafe began life in 1864 as a timber mill, and by the 1870s, provided employment for almost half of Tairua’s population. As the flow of timber from the region slowed, the mill was repurposed to make lime from locally collected seashells.
Once its working life was over, the building was moved to its current site and today provides a charming setting for our cafe.
We can create a private evening dining experience for your group, including a uniquely designed menu. Please note this requires at least a week’s notice and is available for groups of 12 or more.
